Boomers And Harley-Davidson

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

What is the perfect mix? For Harley Davidson, they have mixed their Harleys with Baby Boomers and found they are a perfect mix. Baby Boomers are approaching their social security age so why in the world do they want a Harley? Boomers are not like any of the prior groups of people who have already approached retirement. Boomers still want to continue to live their youth.

Harleys offer fun, excitement, thrills and also a position of class envy. Harleys ain’t cheap so these Yuppies want to buy one and show off their financial status. They aren’t the fastest bikes or the easiest to ride but that don’t matter to a Boomer. It is all about perception. Harley motorcycles, Harley babes, Harley road trips are all part of the dream that unites the Boomer with his Harley.

Even the name of the Harleys seems to point toward us older folks. Harley Softails reminds me I need a soft place to park this old rear end. Harley Fatboy motorcycles and a peak in the mirror reminds me of my physical condition. Let’s not forget the Harley jackets, sunglasses, riding pants and the hundreds of other must have Harley accessories. Face it, Boomers may be getting old but they still need it all.

We even enjoy motorcycle auctions especially if there are some good buys on Harleys. Heck, we even buy a Harley Davidson and rarely ride it. We just park it in the garage and wait for it to appreciate. Funny think; it usually does.

We grew up watching biker movies, the call to Sturgis, and Hell Angels. When we sit down on that hog, we can’t help have vision of being one of those "bad" but misunderstood biker. We just know owning a Harley comes with Harley babes. It is probably a myth but a boomer worth his salt is certainly not going to deny it. It is all about image.

Bottom-line, the good folks over at Harley-Davidson have nurtured this image of Harley motorcycle riders being a tough guy. This image has been translated in quite a successful profitable business that just keeps going on and on. Harleys and the Japanese bikes have no comparison. The Yamaha’s, Suzuki’s, and Kawasaki’s have a reputation of fun, power and sports. Yet they can’t compete against the rumbling sound of a Harley with a Baby Boomer straddling this beast with a huge smile of his or her face.

Harley-Davidson

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Harley-Davidson is a manufacturer of motorcycles based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin that was started with small plans in 1901 by a 21 year old named William S. Harley. In 1903, Harley enlisted help from his friend Arthur Davidson and Davidson’s brother Walter to build a motorcycle strong enough to climb the hills of Milwaukee without using pedals. On September 8, 1904 a Harley-Davidson motorcycle made its first public appearance at State Fair Park in Milwaukee when it was entered in a race and driven by Edward Hildebrand.

The largest manufacturing job for Harley-Davidson came during World War I, while the company was still in its infancy. The United States wanted motorcycles involved in the war effort and asked Harley-Davidson to begin mass-producing bikes for the country. The company produced 20,000 motorcycles for the war effort. Before World War I Harley-Davidson manufactured a handful of motorcycles for the military to use in its border skirmishes with Poncho Villa but did not manufacture as many as they did for World War I.

Harley-Davidson was one of only two motorcycle manufacturing companies to survive the Great Depression in the United States and began supplying the government with motorcycles for use in World War II. During the span of the war Harley-Davidson manufactured over 90,000 motorcycles for the allied forces. Almost 30,000 of the 90,000 manufactured were sent to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program.

During the company’s history Harley-Davidson endured periods of tarnished reputations because of movies and relations to motorcycle gangs. Harley-Davidson motorcycles were used in Hollywood films that depicted outlaw biker gangs during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Harley-Davidson was also associated with the gang the Hells Angels and other motorcycle gangs because their bikes were those gangs’ bikes of choice.

The models being manufacture presently by Harley-Davidson are the Sportster, the Dyna, the Softail, the Touring and the Revolution. All of these models have been in production by Harley-Davidson for decades now.

The Harley-Davidson company has four manufacturing plants across the country and they are located in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; York, Pennsylvania; Tomahawk, Wisconsin and Kansas City, Missouri. The Harley-Davidson museum opened in 2008 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and includes exhibits, an archive, a restaurant and café and a museum store. Tours are offered at all four of the company’s manufacturing plants as well as the museum in Milwaukee. The museum opened on July 12, 2008 and is located at Sixth and Canal streets in downtown Milwaukee. It is a three-building, 130,000 square feet operation that includes a variety of bikes on display as well as other memorabilia. The construction and operation of the museum is costing the Harley-Davidson company an estimated $75 million and should attract close to 350,000 visitors annually from around the world.

In 1983 the Harley-Davidson company formed a ‘fan club’ for the owners of its bikes and they penned it the Harley Owners Group. As an acronym it appears as H.O.G. Hog is also a nickname for motorcycles. In 2006 Harley-Davidson had its NYSE symbol changed from HDI to HOG.

White Fender Stratocasters and White Harley Davidsons

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Exactly what do these two historically unique world changing products have in common? Lots if you want a biased opinion.

My only passion is not just playing the guitar until my hands hurt or my family and dog. Oh Man, I left out my deep passion for the greatest sporting franchise in the history of sports, The Washington Redskins NFL. This is life my friends.

Yup, I’m a biker from the age of five (Not A Clubber). My dad let me mess around a build some of the oddest and unsafe two wheeled vehicles ever. What a nut! I had a great childhood. My whole life has been pretty darn good. I’m very mechanically adept, I can do surgery, of-course I give discounts because I don’t have a medical license!

Enough of that. I’m a purest. That being said, As Fender Guitars changed the world of music, with the Stratocaster vibe having been copied over and over, the real deal is only guitar for me. It’s my vibe. With minor exception, all of my guitar influences play a Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster.

Even Jimmy Page played a Tele on occasion. You know Buddy Guy started all this high performance string bending blues stuff that is so addictive. You should know who Buddy Guy is. He is a living legend, still giving regular concerts, even into his early seventies. He plays a Custom Shop Stratocaster too!

Everyone knows Harley Davidson is the original and still the only American motorcycle company left. Born in 1903, they have endured the test of time and still can’t make enough bikes for all in desire. Harley is one brilliant, out of the box thinking company. Every other brand of bike has struggled over the years to be like a Harley. Particularly in looks and sound.

My theory on Harley wanna be bikes and bikers is that they really want a Harley but can’t afford it. Ask anyone riding a copy of a H.D. about their bike. Inevitably they might expound on the virtues of their bike and why it is better than a Harley. That is O.K. What happens if you asked them what they would own if their bike cost as much as a Harley. A Harley of course!

Take a look at a beautiful White American Stratocaster with chrome hardware and take a look at a beautiful White Harley Davidson and its chrome and stainless hardware. If you can’t see and feel the vibe, then your hopeless. You need to get some emotions and a little voodoochild and rub it on you.

Both products represent true American icons. They define what our country can be proud of and wreak of the glory each company has donated to society. Playing a Strat arouses my emotions and brings out my best vibe. Just looking at a White Clapton Strat gives me an internal feeling of " that is me". Your guitar is a personal extension of yourself.

White Harley’s have the same effect on me. I can hear one a mile away, sorta like I can pick up on a Jimi Hendrix song in a confusing over noisy area. One more thing about Harley’s. Lots of folks think they are to slow. Most HD bikes can go plenty fast. The beauty of a Harley is that it turns going slow into an art-form!

Talking about two of my favorite subjects can get out of hand and may never end. I look forward to a better America in the near future. Enjoy.

Harley Davidson Sportster Motorcycle

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Harley Davidson has been considered as the iconic American bile for ages and owning this bike is luxury for some and sheer passion for alot of others.
Harley Davidson Motor Company based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in USA is the manufacturer of these fine motorcycles.

The Harley Davidson Sportster Motorcycle happens to be the proud member of the Harley Davidson Motorcycles family and came into existence in the year 1958.

The Sportsters bikes were inaccurately based on the then popular K-model racer. The first ever Harley Davidson Sportster was pretty lightweight, relatively narrow and stripped down and had earned a good amount fanfare among the sports bike enthusiasts.

Many bike lovers believe that the Harley Davidson Sportster gradually evolved to become the Harley’s cruiser bike model.

There is a group of people who also like to call this beautiful bike as the semi-sports bike, now that is an interesting way to name a bike!

Today’s evolved Sportster resembles the XLCH Sportster bike model that was created in the year 1958 but amusing enough every single part of the Sportster is different when compared to the XLCH Sportster of 1958.

The batteries and battery boxes, engines, carburetors and air cleaners, exhaust, mufflers, brakes and rotors, rotors, cables and charges, gas tank, oil tank, swing arm, rear shocks, wheels, forks, frames, everything is different but surprisingly the resemblance is austere.

One has to bear in mind that Harley Davidson bikes have always been considered as or rather was intended to be the chopper style bikes. In fact it was Harley Davidson bike that has given a rise to the new whole new cult of custom created bikes.

People often find this fact as contradictory but then if you have ever owned a Harley Davidson or have been an avid admirer of any model of Harleys you would know what it means to be believe in evolution but not revolution.
It is this characteristic of the Harley Davidson Sportster Motorcycle that has made the bike what it is today, a truly retro yet state-of-the-art bike till this date.

It is for this fact that the Harley Davidson motorcycle company, which is the oldest motorcycle manufacturing company, has retained its popularity and credibility as the one of the most renowned motorcycle companies in the world.

The Sportster Motorcycle too lives up to the standards set by the earlier models of Harley Davidson’s motorcycle company. By this yardstick the Harley Davidson Sportster Motorcycle is a real-time example of the evolving work or let’s say a work in progress. Have you ever seen two Sportsters that looked exactly the same?

Believe me one doesn’t have to be a Harley Davidson motorcycle fanatic to be able to answer this. Any layman who knows a little bit about Harleys will answer the question. You will never find two Sportsters that look same, it is again for the reason that the like any other Harley Davidson bike, the Harley Davidson Sportster Motorcycle too is full of possibilities when it comes to the additions and modifications.

This is especially true for the basic XLH 883 and XLH 1200 models. The type and number of modifications that you can do to your Harleys Sportster can be limited only by your own creativity and imagination.

Whether it’s engine performance, safety accessories, comfort and convenience accessories, appearance accessories, the possibilities are many.

It is the final touches that you give to your Sportster that lends the personality to your Sportster.
No wonder that even today a well-maintained and well-treated Sportster is capable of fetching you a 100% of the original cost price as the resale value.

Sensible Security Precautions For Harley Davidson Motorbikes

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

If you own a Harley Davidson then you will want to make sure that is insured for every possible eventuality! The popular believe that insurance is cheaper for these motorbikes because they are not sports machine and are generally ridden by matured people is in many ways a myth!

Yes, the bikes may not be sports version and yes, typically they are owned and driven by mature riders, however they are one of the most sought after motorbikes by thieves. On top of this many are customised or have fabulous artwork, or both, which immediately raises the cost of the insurance.

Any Harley owner is aware that prevention is better than their precious machine being target by thieves, not only will added security help reduce the risk of theft it will also help to lower the insurance premiums.

First and foremost keeping your Harley in a metal or brick built garage which is securely locked will be one of the first requests made by insurance companies.

Sensible security precautions:

Alarms and immobilizers: There are few insurance companies in the UK who will offer insurance cover for any new model motorbikes which do not have an alarm and an immobilizer fitted. Alarms are available to suit all budgets, basically the higher the cost the better the alarm. Latest models in motorbike alarms have auto-error checking for false alarms and other features, however the more gizmo’s the more likely errors will occur, opt for insurance approved CAT systems.

Locks and security devices: These have been proven to be effective against opportunist thieves as they a distinctive visual deterrents which make life difficult for the thieves. Again opt for the most effective devices within your budget. Cable locks, disc locks, movement alarms and high quality padlocks are widely available. When your Harley is in your garage additional security such as ground anchors and wheel clamps are well worth the investment especially if you have a highly valuable customised bike.

If you have customised your Harley or have add-ons, special additions or clones this will increase the market value of your bike, as such you will need to come to an agreement with the insurers as to the value for which it is insured. Art-work and distinctive paint jobs should be photographed as this will help will the possibility of a successful recovery if your bike is stolen. Security marking systems are also a good way of helping your bike be identified and recovered successfully.

Another reason Harley Davidson motorbikes are more expensive to insure than some other bikes is due to the fact they are expensive to repair once damaged, they are also notoriously easy to strip and change the bikes identity.

Some Harley’s are so valuable that theft to order is often a common occurrence on the continent. If you are thinking of taking your Harley abroad then ensure you have the appropriate Harley Davidson motorcycle insurance cover. Speak with your insurer to get the best possible insurance deals which meet your riding needs, don’t forget to include insurance for taking your bike organised Harley Owners meetings and events both within the UK and abroad.

Whats In Your Harley Davidson?

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Harley Davidson has earned popularity and a distinct mark among the bike lovers for it’s illustrious design and the exhaust note.

They are renowned more for the tradition of heavy customization that paved way for whole new cult of chopper style motorbikes.

The parts that are used by it’s manufacturers for the outer design and the inner body are uniquely constructed and till this date it is difficult to emulate the Harley Davidson parts without compromising on its performance.

It is noteworthy to observe how Harley Davidson parts have been used to create a pseudo Harleys model. It is amusing to see people attempting to create a pseudo model using genuine parts, what a paradox!

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call Harley Davidson as the archetype among the wide range of existing motorbikes in the market.

Manufacturers of the motorbikes and the zealous bikers have made attempts time and again to emulate this magical bike and have tried to incorporate its features and style into other custom made bikes.

However Harley Davidson continues to be the word class and stand apart bike among the umpteen brands that crop up every year around the world. Among the carbon copy creators you will also find the group of Harley Davidsons’ aficionado who prefer to remain loyal to this brand.

One of the characteristics that make this bike the most interesting invention in the history of the motorbikes is that it is a Chopper style bike, hence though creating replicas of this bike is next to impossible thing, it was originally meant to be changing and evolving regularly with pace of time and inventive technology.

The original Harley Davidson was created in such a way that it had the inherent potential flexibility and scope to be revised and redesigned by altering the parts and components that came together to create this historical bike.

However though it’s virtually impossible to proclaim to have said all about this legendary bike in a single write up, at least one can arrive at the fact that Harley Davidson continues to be an iconic bike not just in US but all around the world.

The Harley Davidson’s parts including the batteries and battery boxes, engines, carburetors and air cleaners, exhaust, mufflers, brakes and rotors, rotors, cables and charges et al are still in demand. The potential buyers of the Harley Davidson’s parts are mostly the ones who have bought them in second-sale deal or of course the owners of the original counter-sold Harley Davidson.

It has certainly become much easier now to access the parts of this motor bike still finding a deal that is reasonable it terms of price and offers you genuine parts, can be pretty challenging. As the manufacturers of the Harleys have retained their rights to its creation, the supply of the basic components that make up the bike is stringent.

Of course there are umpteen number of websites that claim to offer you home delivery of Harley Davidson’s original parts, both brand new and the refurbished parts, one has to use caution before venturing into such online deals. Harley Davidson is thus by all means a high-maintenance bike, for it’s high price and its expensive parts too.

One of the best and practical ways to ensure that you don’t end up buying a good-looking yet cheap in quality remake of the Harley Davidson’s parts is to enroll yourself into online forums that discuss happenings about the bike.

You have a very good chance of bumping into Harleys enthusiasts and can learn and teach them a thing or to about the bike and its parts.

William Harley, Arthur Davidson Soichiro Honda Didn’t Like Bikes!

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

When we think of the business empires that were started in garages, images of computer whiz-kids immediately come to mind. But the trend of giant Oaks from little acorns goes back much further than this. As far as motorcycles are concerned, they don’t come much bigger than Harley Davidson and Honda, who as the pioneers of the motorcycle culture held a commonality in that their dreams were born on different sides of the globe from a dislike of bikes.

By bikes, I mean of course, the pedal variety. In 1903 William Harley and Arthur Davidson with the help of Arthurs brother, Walter, took their first steps on the road to glory in an attempt to conquer the hills of Milwaukee with a motor powered bicycle. Their first attempts failed, but by 1904 they had improved their design enough to be able to enter a race at the state fair. They came fourth, and within two years had moved from their garage to their first company factory address. The address in Chesnut Street, now Juneau Avenue, is still their corporate headquarters today.

Although separated by a generation, Soichiro Honda also began his career surrounded by bicycles. His father, a blacksmith by trade also owned a bicycle repair shop where Soichiro grew up with a fascination for all things mechanical. After a six year apprenticeship on an auto repair shop in Tokyo Soichiro returned home to set up his own auto repair shop but it was his adaption skills in adding a piston engine to a bicycle that would start him on the road to success.

By the time that The Honda motor Company was formed, the Harley Davidson Motor Company was a world leader in motorcycle production. They had supplied custom bikes to the army through two World Wars until the Jeep took over as the utility vehicle of choice. In 1952 under increasing competition , Harley Davidson applied for a 40% import tariff on foreign motorcycles. The application led to charge of restrictive practices against the company. This would be the first of a string of events that would lead the company into decline during the following decades. Through Hollywoods portrayal of the bikes in outlaw biker movies such as The Wild One in 1953 starring Marlon Brando and later, in the now cult movie, Easy Rider with Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson, the Harley Davidson name became synonymous with rebellion and illegality. What we view today as an integral part of what makes a Harley special, was, at the time, damaging sales of the bikes and threatening the very future of the company.

Things got worse in 1969, when the company was bought by American Machinery and Foundry. AMF attempted to streamline production resulting in a labor strike that let to the manufacture of sub-standard machines. There unreliability became a standing joke and the bikes gained nicknames such as ‘hardly driveable’ and ‘hogly ferguson’ It was from this last nickname that the riders of Harleys would later be called ‘Wild Hogs’.

It would take a group of thirteen investors to lead the recovery in the fortune of Harley Davidson motorcycles. Bought in 1981 from AMF, they implemented new manufacturing protocols and regained the reliabilty standards of the companies early models. Funnily enough though, it was the depiction of the bikes between the 50’s and 70’s that would finally give Harleys the cult status they hold today.

They say that ‘What doesn’t kill you, will make you stronger’. Well, whilst Marlon, Peter and Jack’s portrayals came close to ending this American icon, it was the cult status of the era and these films, that would endure to provide the maturing ‘baby boomers’ with their piece of nostalgia.

Harley Davidson became the custom bike to own through the nineties and its stock price soared. No longer the evil machine of rebellion, the bikes had become the symbol of a generation of achievers looking to recreate the image of their teenage heroes.

In todays 24/7 society, with Blackberrys and pagers, mobiles and handhelds, hitting the road on a Harley, with nothing but the sound of the exhaust in your ear, is the new dream, for a new generation looking to escape their 100mph lifestyle, by doing 120mph alone on the open road instead! Go Hogs!
