Harley Davidson. The name brings to mind wind in your hair, the smell of leather, and the freedom of the open road. Most who have ever owned or dreamed of owning a motorcycle place the Harley Davidson as the pinnacle of the motorcycle-riding world. The father of all motorcycles and the founder of over 100 years of tradition, Harleys have been filling the garages and parking spots of motorcycle enthusiasts since the turn of the twentieth century. With a few well-placed movie appearances in a few culture-defining movies, Harley skyrocket into the place of world top selling motorcycle.

Harley Davidson single handedly made the motorcycle an acceptable form of transportation, first with the counter culture movement then moving into mainstream over the years. Today the brand has become one of the most recognizable brand names in the world. Harley makes almost as much on marketing and licensing every year as they do on motorcycles. The name is used to describe a certain style of motorcycle by most who do not ride and has reached the level of being part of everyday language the way Kleenex has for tissue paper. Just as popular with the upper and middle class riders as with the counter culture, Harley has managed to shake most of its tough guy image and become truly a bike for the masses.

Harley Davidson was originally an American fad, but in the past few decades, Harley has seen an explosion of popularity in the international markets. Worldwide sales have skyrocketed and people in every country and most territories have found the joy of Harley Davison ownership. With the turn of the century, Harley has taken hold of the worldwide motorcycle market and is poised to be in control of this market for a long time to come. Their business and advertising campaigns and the product placement that have made the brand such a success should serve as an example to us all of the proper and effective way to build a business into a household name.

In the past few years of rising fuel and energy costs, Harley has taken a new identity as an eco- friendly alternative form of transportation. With gas mileage between forty-five and fifty-five miles per gallon, Harley Davidson is more efficient than ninety-nine percent of the production vehicles on the market today. Fuel prices are expected to get worse over the foreseeable future and Harley is poised to take advantage of the peoples? demand for high mileage vehicles.

With more than one hundred years notched on their belt, Harley Davidson is praised with building the best motorcycles on the planet. There is little doubt that they deserve the acclaim.

Arthur Davidson and William Harley dreamed of creating a "motorized bicycle" in their early adulthood. Test models were created and failed miserably, but this never deterred the boys from achieving their goal. Despite early models requiring foot power on hills, Harley and Davidson continued striving to create the "motorized bicycle" that they knew would become a success.

By 1906, the first fifty motorcycles were manufactured. A few years later, they followed with a line of motorcycles for police and military use. Short of a slowdown in the 1970s, Harley Davidson never stopped tweaking and improving their models. Today, Harley Davison produces millions of motorcycles for use on every corner of the world.

The distinct engine roar and loud vibrations through their tailpipes allow onlookers to hear the motorcycle far before it is visible. Listening to the strength of a Harley Davidson engine is an experience few will forget.

Three motorcycle nicknames were established courtesy of Harley Davidson. "Choppers" were born when the angle of the motorcycle’s front fork was extended allowing the handlebars to sit further back. "Hogs" became aptly named for the extra room used to transport racing pigs without switching to a larger vehicle. Who said people are the only ones who can ride a Harley? "Harleys" offered a shorter, catchier way to name a motorcycle manufactured by Harley Davidson.

Every March, Harley Davidson takes the Daytona by storm. June brings the Harleys to New England by way of Laconia, New Hampshire. Sturgis, South Dakota becomes a home away from home for many riders every August. Thousands of Harley Davidson’s enthusiasts attend these gatherings. Many leave with dreams of having their own bike customized to match what they have seen on other bikes.

In 1983, H.O.G., The Harley Owners Group, formed its first chapter. Today more than 1,000 chapters are in existence and more than one million members share their love of these bikes, whether they own one or not. The devotion to this fine brand is proven, and you do not have to be among the elite to enjoy all there is to Harley Davidson. There are also a slew of online forums and websites devoted to Harley Davidson. Not even Yamaha, BMW, Victory, or Honda come close to having the same fan base.

Even if you cannot afford a Harley, you can still show your enthusiasm for the maker by purchasing items from their merchandise line. All of these items help contribute to Harley Davidson’s $5 billion revenue every year. Hey, the advertising helps too! Not that Harley Davidson is hurting for promotion.

Harley Davidson truly is the reigning champion of motorcycle manufacturers. What others strive to achieve in their lifetime, Harley Davidson has conquered.

If you are a motorcycle enthusiast of any kind you have probably thought about buying a Harley Davidson at some point in time. The sound, the power, the ride all seem alluring to those of us who like it on two wheels. One option when purchasing a Harley is to go with a used bike. Most Harley owners maintain their bikes better than their cars so buying into the used market is a pretty safe bet unlike other makes or brands. Harley owners have a lot of pride in their bikes.

So when you go to buy a used motorcycle and in this case a Harley here are the top things you need to consider to make it a good sale and a good ride for you.

1. One of the biggest advantages of buying a used Harley is that more than likely it will already be somewhat customized. The basic truth is that most stock bikes off the factory are not that great looking. So most Harley owners right away go and add lots of chrome, maybe a new seat, a backrest and sometimes a windshield or saddlebags.

2. Now if you bought a new bike and then went and purchased all of these nice and fancy accessories it might run you ton of bucks. Not to mention you have to have them installed or spend lots of time doing it yourself. Then you will find that many a used bike has had a custom paint job done to it which can drive the price up as well.

3. A key factor in deciding to go used is that the average Harley Davidson maintains its value well, but if you buy a brand-new bike you will find it depreciates quite a bit the first year. This is just like any new car you might buy. So now we have three good reasons why buying a used bike are a good idea for you. How about some more?

4. When checking out a used Harley over at the seller’s house or place of business you will want to give it a close look over to make sure it has not been in an accident or dropped. Some of the key things to look for when inspecting the bike are new brake or clutch grips, mirrors or foot pegs. This could be a warning sign that the bike has been dropped, since these are the first to get damaged. Man have I had that happen to me. Back in the days of my first bikes this was all too common. Now with big bikes I am not dropping them if I can help it at all.

5. Ask the seller in some detail why he wants to sell the bike. It never hurts to have a conversation to determine just what the motivation is for the seller. With the way the economy is today, a lot of people are selling for financial reasons. Harley owners are dedicated, but if it comes down to the House or the bike, in most cases the house payment usually wins. You can help a fellow Harley owner out by buying his bike and you will also be getting a great deal below market value. Make it a conversation and not an inquisition. Get into their love for the bike and find out if it is hardship, upgrading or what that is motivating them to sell. By being interested in their story you might even turn things in your favor when it comes time to nail down a price.

In these days of vast shopping and research options on the internet, shopping for a used Harley online is the easiest way to find a good deal. Online auctions are a good source. Be sure and read the description carefully and don’t hesitate to ask for more pictures from the seller. If you need close-ups of anything be sure and say so. Most sellers are happy to send you more photographs. If you purchased your used Harley online then you will need to arrange for shipping at a reasonable price. Some of the online motor vehicle auction sites like eBay will give you a quote before you make your purchase.

It will always pay to do your research no matter whether you are looking for your bike online or across town. Be thorough, ask questions, take a test ride if you can and most of all, be diligent and honest in your transaction with the seller. Then once you get that used Harley Davidson home you can make it your pride and joy. And don’t forget the insurance and helmet if you live in a helmet law state.

If you own a motorcycle you might want to dress in black leather everyday others just like to dress as they want. The true Harley Davidson rider will know what to wear and ride, from clothes to accessories, you can buy everything at the dealership or online.

The Black leather jacket is the first thing you should buy when it comes to riding. Harley Davidson has a nice black leather jacket and it is only made by them, not only is this jacket worn for protection but will also protect from the elements. You will need to get a jacket that fits. You will need to get a leather jacket that is a little big. Also the jacket will stretch to meet your body when you’re riding. This doesn’t mean to buy a jacket that is smaller so it will make a good fit.

Black leather pants are another good thing to wear when you ride bikes. Purchasing black leather pants is the bottom half of your protection. There are many different types of these pants in sizes and shapes.

The other thing is the black riding boots. You can buy these for women and men. Women can choose from all kinds of boots as well as men.

Should motorcycle riders wear helmets? The answer is left to the rider. You might as well wear the helmet since you bought all the gear as in the pants, jacket, and boots.

If you choose not to wear a helmet you should always wear goggles, these will protect your eyes as your own little windshield. You don’t want anything to get into your eyes when you are riding a bike. It would be really bad if something were to happen.

Gloves are another thing that will be of interest to you if you are a rider. These are most likely black as well, which will allow you to grip without the sweat ripping you away from the bike as you ride.

These pieces of clothing are the basic things to be a rider of a any bike and especially the Harley Davidson look. Most of the bikers that you dressed in these clothes will be riding Harleys or a wannabe.

You can even buy biker clothes for your baby as well. If you have a son or daughter that likes to go with you, there are many things you can buy for them as well to be protected with.

When you buy leather motorcycle clothes, these clothes should be well taken care of and preserved. So you will have them to use and ride with for times to come. There shouldn’t be a time when you are on your Harley and you are not wearing black leather.

You watched them roar by as a kid. You felt the urge as an adult. Then you made the choice to buy a Harley of your own. Now each and every Harley-Davidson rider wants to have a unique Harley that is distinct to any of the existing Harley in the world. This creates more pride and excitement to the owner. This is why a customized Harley-Davidson is the second factory of either a brand new or pre-owned Harleys. My first impression of a custom Harley was when I was ten. My dad’s friend had a custom blue Electra Glide that had every possible accessory you could get on it. That thing was amazing. Too bad he would not give me a ride on it. But I got my motorcycle "Jones" later in my teens when I could buy my own.

So what is a customized Harley-Davidson?

Have you ever been to the big auto shows like the LA Auto Show or the Detroit Auto Show? Have you seen those custom made vehicles that are truly one of their kinds? Have you seen those one of a kind vehicles that shine like crazy and amaze the eye with their lines and details?

Well along those lines a customized Harley-Davidson motorcycle is a motorcycle that has been modified and fabricated to become the one and only of a particular look or theme. A customized Harley-Davidson motorcycle shows the world an insight into the owner’s personal impression and the artistic expression in their motorcycle ride.

Why is owning a customized Harley-Davidson so hot these days?

No matter where you go in the world, a Harley-Davidson is a head turner. That only gets magnified if the ride is customized and modified to the nth degree as a customized Harley-Davidson. How much attraction could it get if the Harley has been modified with all the latest custom accessories available?
Unless you are on a tight budget it only makes sense to create a unique ride with your Harley-Davidson motorcycle that would signify your inner creativity, customization is the only resort. Thus, when a customized Harley hits a show or the road, no one can resist its power to turn heads. Customized Harley-Davidson’s are hot because of these simple facts.
So where do you go to get custom Harley-Davidson services?

There several great sites out on the internet such as Cyril Huze, where you can get just the most amazing and eye popping add-ons for your Harley. You really have to see what he can do for your ride. Another spot on the net is Hog Painter. At Hog Painter you will find Tom who has over 24 years of custom painting experience and can transform your Harley motorcycle into a work of art. They will convert your Harley-Davidson into a more exciting machine to ride. They will make your Harley-Davidson the best one in town.

So search out and find the customization that your Harley deserves and make it into a ride worth turning heads every time you ride down the street in your town.

It was a decisive day in the history of American automobile culture in 1902, when two young friends left their stable jobs at a Milwaukee engineering firm to embark upon a venture that would irrevocably shape the course of motorcycle history forever.

This was the day when William S Harley and Arthur Davidson designed and built the first single-cylinder engine (400CC) right out of a toolshed in Davidson’s backyard.

Although though the first motor was reliable, it was enlarged because it was underpowered. The initial frame was too weak to hold the new engine so it was replaced with a stronger, more substantial structure that was built similar to the prototype. In 1903 they produced two more bikes and three the following year. By 1907, Harley Davidson’s growing reputation for their reliable product helped to push their annual production rate to over 150. The year was also 1907 when Harley Davidson decided it was time to raise money for expansion. They became a corporation and divided the shares among seventeen employees. They moved themselves out of the Davidson’s shed and into a much bigger premise which is still their location – Juneau Avenue in Milwaukee.

The early models of Harley-Davidson motorbikes had no lights and no suspension. Within a few years after production began, Harley’s soon had fitted leading link forks a magneto ignition and a carbide gas headlamp. The model 5 produced in 1909 had about 4bhp from its 494cc inlet over exhaust engine, with a speed of 45mph. Bicycle petals were used to start the engine. Once the bike was in motion the leather drive belt was tightened using a hand lever. (To have a more contemporary view of what harley davidson parts now look like, please visit our website).

The first V-twin Harley was built in 1909. It was the model 5D but was not an immediate success. The V-twin produced close to 7bhp, which was almost twice as much as the single engine but it was difficult to start and suffered from a slipping drive belt. Two years later, in 1911, they introduced the 45-degree V-twin with a revised valve gear, new frame and had been fitted with a full floating seat and chain drive. These new improvements made a huge difference which caused the V-twin’s popularity to grow. By the year 1913 the model 9E’s 1000cc power plant was producing 10bhp which gave the bike a top speed of 60mph.

Initially Harley-Davidson was reluctant to get themselves involved in racing, such as reliability runs however, by 1914 they changed their minds and entered a factory team. The firm’s Milwaukee crew, the “Wrecking Crew” rode powerful 8-valve V-twins which were very competitive against the rival Merkel and Excelsior, and Indian. This became a great period for Harley-Davidson as production rose to more than 22,000 bikes and 16,000 sidecars in 1919. These numbers were cut in half in the upcoming 2 years mainly because of the Model T Ford, which put the majority of American motorcycle companies out of business.

Harley-Davidson is known for its large capacity V-twins but the smaller 45ci Forty Five played a vital part in the history of the company. The Forty Five, produced in 1928, was the first machine with a total loss oil system. It was restyled and updated 9 years later to create the W series. It was the simple and strong Forty Five that kept Harley-Davidson in business through the Depression of the 1930’s. The WLA model proved to be a useful military machine in which close to 80,000 were being used in the Second World War. These “war bikes” were converted for civilian use after the war was over which helped to popularize Harley-Davidson worldwide.

In 1936, while still suffering the effects of the Depression, Harley-Davidson introduced the Model 61E. This model’s 61cc V-twin engine was a huge advancement over other models due to its overhead valve design and recirculating oil system. The neat style of the 61E helped it become a huge success. It became known as the knucklehead because of the shape of the engines rocker covers. It gave it a technical advantage over its rival Indian and became the ancestor to modern Harley’s.

Harley-Davidson will forever be synonymous with producing great bikes. What started as a dream, survived the Depression, and is still going strong today. There is nothing quite like hearing the rumble of a Harley as you’re heading for the highway.

Are you looking to upgrade the seat on your Harley Davidson? If the stock Harley Seat is giving you a pain in the butt, literally then we’ve got some tips to make buying a Harley Seat that will fit you like a glove much easier. We’ve been eating and sleeping Harley Davidson motorcycles for a number of years so we’ve learned a thing or two about seats that make your butt feel good.

Follow along with these tips and let’s see if we can’t find you the perfect Harley Seat for your motorcycle and SAVE you money doing it.

Tip 1:

As easy as it looks don’t decide which Harley Seat to buy out of a magazine or a catalog. It’s very difficult to truly get an idea what a seat will look like visually from a picture. A seat that looks great on a bagger might look terrible on your lowered softail and you’re kind of stuck with it once you buy it. I would always recommend that you try to find a motorcycle with the seat already mounted on it so you can get the full visual effect. At the very least search for pictures of your model bike with that model of seat.

Tip 2:

Don’t ask people’s opinions on what a certain seat feels like to ride. Ride comfort is so subjective from rider to rider and everyone prefers something different. Some people like a firm ride while others prefer a plush ride and what is comfortable to one person may not be comfortable to you. When possible there is no substitute for being able to log some seat time in the saddle that you are thinking about. Even that can be misleading as many saddles get much more comfortable with a little break in time.

Tip 3:

It is always good practice to buy the best quality Harley Seat that you can afford to buy. A Harley seat is one of the make or break items that can either make your ride comfortable and enjoyable or a miserable, painful experience that you cannot wait for it to be over. Which scenario sounds like more fun to you? You can usually avoid issues by buying a brand name seat with a good reputation. A sure sign that a seat is popular and probably comfortable is if it is common. If you see it everywhere or it is made by one of the big brands then you will most likely be happy with your selection. I would suggest buying a seat from a company like Corbin, LePera or Mustang as all of these companies are established and proven in the Harley Davidson world. There are many more but these are some of the more recognizable brands that I have personal experience with and would recommend.

Tip 4:

Once you have finally narrowed your selection down to the specific model you are going to buy then go online and look for a deal. There isn’t anything wrong with trying to save money and you can save as much as 30-40% buying on Ebay as you can buying at your local dealer. Your dealer might try to make it seem like he’s giving you a good deal but make sure to compare to Ebay. Ebay is a buyers paradise for merchandise and a little bit of research can save you a ton of money. Installing most Harley Seats is a piece of cake so I would plan on doing that yourself.

I could literally go on and on and on but I think you get the idea. It’s time to hit the road and find the best Harley Seat for your motorcycle and your own personal taste.

The roar of a Harley Davidson motorcycle engine is a sound that is unmistakable. The low thunderous hum of a Hog is music to ears for many motorcycle enthusiasts. For 105 years Harley Davidson has been producing heavy bikes made by Americans for the American rider.

Each year owners of the famous motorcycle brand gather to ride in rallies and events held around the county. As this year marks the anniversary of Harley Davidson building and selling motorcycles for 105 years! Huge celebrations have been planned across the country and the biggest will be a week long Summerfest celebration in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The party will be starting on Wednesday, August 27 and run through the weekend, ending on Sunday, August 31, 2009.

Activities planned for the event include shows, street parties and lots of great musical entertainment from current and classic bands. Food, fireworks and live entertainment, all centered on the tradition and heritage of Harley Davidson, are expected to fill the Milwaukee streets with two to three hundred thousand motorcycle enthusiasts and fans of the classic bikes.

For 100 years, police motorcycles have been the mainstay of highway patrols across the county and Harley Davidson has been the preferred provider of police motorcycles from the beginning. A competition for law enforcement riding skills is planned for the 105 year celebration of Harley Davidson during Summerfest.

These celebrations may be primarily attended by men who want to show off their manly hogs, but men aren’t the only ones with a passion for fine American tuning ant the open road. In fact, Harley Davidson now has as many female fans and riders as it does male. And like their male counterparts, female motorcycle enthusiasts don womens Harley leather jackets to show their pride and loyalty to the manufacturer.

Motorcycles and leather jackets go together like ketchup and mustard on a hotdog. Worn for the heavy weight of the material, leather riding gear is designed to protect motorcycle riders in the event of an accident. Wipeouts from motorcycles can be deadly, but riders that are protected by leather suits are less likely to sustain injury when sliding across the asphalt after a tumble from a moving motorcycle. The Harley Davidson womens leather jacket is form fitted like the male counterpart and is a stylish and practical addition to a rider’s wardrobe.

Motorcycle jackets have been a fashionable part of Americana from the beginning, and whether an enthusiast or a novice, leather jackets make a statement that the wearer is tough enough to tame the thunder of the American made, 105 year old, Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Buying a Harley-Davidson motorcycle says a lot about you already. You want more from a bike than two wheels to get you from A to B. The raw power, the brutal beauty, the animal howl of the engine are things no other machine out there has.

Harley owners are individualists. You value your membership in the Harley brotherhood but you still are your own person and want to ride your machine, not someone else’s.

What can you do to carve your individual message into your bike?

Make it dazzling

Harley-Davidson motorcycles are already breathtaking sculptures of metal, examples of industrial art of the highest order. With custom Harley parts you can add your own creativity to make this a personal artistic masterpiece.

Custom chrome turns your machine into a gleaming silver streak, a stunning collection of light and shadow. Chrome motorcycle parts can adorn your bike from wheel to wheel, whether you want a few chrome accents or an entire collection of highlights that dazzles onlookers.

There are other decorative custom Harley parts as well. From bayonet wheels to upswept exhaust pipes, from motorcycle fenders to saddle seats, you can find a variety of subtle details for your bike to make the visual statement you are after.

Make it powerful

Of course many Harley owners are less concerned with how it looks than how it moves.

You can improve the performance of your bike by installing any number of custom chopper parts such as Harley transmissions or new motorcycle tanks. You can improve the engine’s torque or horsepower or both. Turn your street bike into a mean machine that can blow past anything else on the road.

Other custom Harley parts that can improve your machine’s performance include new tires or suspensions. It all depends on what you want from your machine: power, speed, maneuverability, or something else.

Make it yours

In the end, this machine is an extension of your personality. It is part of the image you present to the world and only you are the best judge of how to customize it right.

With the wide range of custom Harley parts out there, there is practically no limit to the kind of changes you can make. Whether you are after looks, performance, or both customizing your Harley is one of the most satisfying hobbies you can have.

Do you think you don’t have the knowhow? You might be surprised. You don’t have to start by rebuilding the engine. Choose something small like replacing a few pieces with chrome. Move on to larger ventures. As each project is complete, you will take greater pride in your bike. You will find yourself wanting to do more challenging projects, making this machine truly your own.

Have you checked out the price of a new bike lately? It wasn’t that long ago when you didn’t have to fork out that much dough for a new car. In fact, many bikers will remember when you didn’t have to pay much more than that for a modest house. The prices for houses and cars have shot up over the years. And, so has the prices of motorcycles. The point is, the price of a new bike can take a good-sized bite out of any budget. Buying a used motorcycle is one way to lessen the dent a motorcycle will make in your wallet. There are a number of benefits to buying a used motorcycle. The first is, of course, that you can save a lot of money. As a general rule, motorcycles lose a higher percent of their value when they roll out of the showroom than do automobiles. The possible exception to this is Harley-Davidson. Harley’s always seem to retain a high resale value. The second reason is that many motorcycles are not ridden many miles each year, especially in colder climates. So, it is easier to find a good, low mileage bike. Makes such as Moto Guzzi are especially durable and a low mileage model will have many trouble-free miles left in it. A third reason is that if there are any quirks to be worked out of a new model or a particular machine, these will likely have been done by the time the second owner gets the bike.

There are a number of sources available when buying a used motorcycle. You can buy a bike from the current owner. The classifieds online and in the newspapers are filled with ads for used bikes. You can also check with a dealership for trade-ins. Bikes at dealerships will often come with a warranty.

Tips On Buying A Used Motorcycle

So, how do you make sure you get a good deal? Here are a few tips on buying a used motorcycle. First, check out a used motorcycle price guide. There are several good ones. A good one is the National Auto Dealers Association (N.A.D.A.) price guide. The prices in this monthly guide reflect the average price of motorcycles of similar make, model and condition across the nation. The price guide is issued monthly.

Spend a little time reading the reviews of various makes and models. Many of these reviews are posted on the web and they can give you some subjective information on what these particular riders think about the bike.

Check the condition of the motorcycle over closely. What is the condition of the drive belt, chain or drive shaft? Are the tires worn or weather checked? Has the bike ever been wrecked? Does it leak oil? Is the muffler or mufflers free of rust? Is the wiring in good shape? Does it start easily and run smoothly?

If the deal likes like a go at this point, ask to take the bike for a test drive. While you are at it, if possible, take it to your mechanic and get a second opinion.

If your mechanic gives you the OK, get your wallet out and enjoy the ride. Most makes of motorcycles these days are well engineered and high quality machines. Don’t make the process of buying a bike a bigger deal than it needs to be. Used motorcycles are generally an excellent value, especially when compared to the price of new bikes. Besides, this is one time when it is fun to shop. So, have some fun buying a used motorcycle.
